IN OTHER WORDS.
The Black Market of Translations - Negotiating Contemporary Cultures
is the title of an art exhibition which uses the operations of translation - reading, understanding, interpreting and rewriting a foreign text - as a cultural strategy to cross into other cultures. The exhibition displays a market of the foreign and otherness, inviting artists that explore the language of the Other to work in-between languages and cultures, penetrating, embodying and 'contrabanding' Others' words.

Beyond the prevailing passive co-existence of multiculturalism and static cultural diversity, it is necessary to explore a significant exchange between cultures by taking up the active practice of translation. In the spirit of a black market, the exhibition temporally exposes and reveals the acts of cultural transaction, transference, and translation of this cultural economy of the in-between, posing the question whether translation could reconcile the differences that separate languages, identities, and cultures, while proposing a form of 'cultural translation' which could ultimately become a concept for further cooperation and negotiation for contemporary cultures.
As a Black Market, the metaphor of 'illegal traffic' gives room for several counter-translations and adjoins the notion of a double-exhibition, which exposes multiple translation operations - major and minor; dominant and in resistance; official and censored - thus achieving a broader understanding of the experience of globalization, including the consideration of popular, informal, and alternative practices.

El Nuevo Municipio en Other Markets (UCSD San Diego)

Informal markets have emerged as a vital part of cities around the world, from the new mega-cities of the Global South to the old centers of political and economic power. Spurred by deregulation and accelerating global flows, they are commonly tolerated as shock-absorbers of widening social divisions. Yet, whenever these markets show signs of establishing realms of their own official rhetoric paints them as threat to social and economic order, often followed by governmental actions of demolition, re-location or privatization.
Debating the spatial culture of informal markets as an arena of negotiation between multiple political demands, social actors and environmental constraints, 'Informal Market Worlds' departs from the question of how we can build more equal participation in the space of economy vis-à-vis the economy of space. In what ways can the spatial practices and cultural mechanisms that sustain informal markets help us in articulating progressive policies more adapt to the transnational realities of today's populations?

Arrhythmias: Narrative, political imagination & (im)possible archives

One-Day Conference

January 13 > 10:00am - 5:30pm

UCSD VAF Performance Space

Please join the University Art Gallery (UAG) for a one-day conference that brings together scholars and practitioners from Buenos Aires, San Diego, LA and New York who are working in and across various disciplines: visual arts, history, literature, theater, media art, documentary film, sound art and architecture. This conference explores artistic investigations into narrative as it shapes social and political imaginaries, as well as creative work in and on archives: from the archive’s proliferate contingencies, its silences, to the possibilities of counter-public archives.

This is the closing conference for Arrhythmias of Counter-Production: Engaged Art in Argentina, 1995-2011, on view at the UAG through January 20, 2012. It will feature keynote presentations by two of the artists in the exhibition who are visiting UCSD from Buenos Aires: Eduardo Molinari, founder of El Archivo Caminante / The Walking Archive, and Julian D’Angiolillo, who is a visual artist, land artist and award-winning documentary filmmaker.

The morning session on narrative will also feature a panel and roundtable discussion with Teddy Cruz, an architect and scholar of trans-border urban dynamics and alternative urbanisms; artist and filmmaker Steve Fagin; Fran Ilich, a media artist + activist and writer; and artist and scholar Mariana Razo Wardwell (aka Botey).

The afternoon’s session on archives features LA artist Sandra de la Loza, the founder of the Pocho Research Society; Grant Kester, a leading scholar on dialogical and relational art; literary scholar and writer Rosaura Sánchez; and members the sound art collective Ultra-red whose work bring together audio investigation and social justice organizing.

This event is organized by Jennifer Flores Sternad, a scholar of militant and activist art and performance in the Americas and curator of the Arrhythmias of Counter-Production exhibition.

Arritmias de Contra-Producción / Arrhythmias of Counter-Production

Hacerme feriante, 2010

Arrhythmias of Counter-Production: Engaged Art in Argentina, 1995-2011

Arrhythmias will showcase art practices developed in Argentina since the mid-1990s that demonstrate exceptionally creative, and widely diverse, modes of engagement with present-day social and political struggles. The artists featured in the exhibition combine artistic practices and the pursuit of creative experimentation with methodologies and epistemologies, such as those associated with militant research, radical pedagogy, direct action, community organizing, critical cartography, tactical media and Brechtian theater. Many of the projects in the exhibition were developed through direct contact with, or in explicit alignment with, left social movements. In some cases, the artistic practice was coextensive with popular forms of struggle or grass-roots organizing. Other projects include anti-imperialist historiographical interventions that interweave the Southern Cone's colonial history with its present-day neoliberal order, studies of vast informal economies and the migrant and local labor that sustains them, and provocative street performances and media interventions that reveal the logic behind the discursive and legal system of anti-terrorism.
This work evolved in response to the various political and subjective tensions that accompanied the Argentine economic crisis, which peaked in 2001 and 2002. These include a profound negation of state institutions, the protagonism of autonomous social movements, and popular militancy and grass-roots organizing attached to aesthetic invention. Another important point of reference for these artists is their understanding of the period popularly dubbed "post-crises," characterized by re-legitimation of the traditional political system, the repression and domestication of social movements and a turn towards a discourse of security. Described by its architects as a return to "normal capitalism," this transformation has been hailed internationally -- as well as by some sectors in Argentina -- as a remarkable "recovery" and successful return to stability.
If, as Ruth Gilmore writes, "Crisis signals systemic social change whose outcome is determined through struggle," the works in this exhibition trace the contours of this struggle over the past decade, up to the present. In doing so, they reject official representations of stability and development, defy the image of a kinder and gentler "normal" capitalism and interrogate the political theater through which these ideas are promoted. Dismantling the narrative of crisis and "recovery," they instead reveal the conditions of stability for the crisis state, and what it costs in labor, terror and even life --
